About This Fishery

The Low Flow Feather River refers to the section of river from the Table Mountain Boulevard bicycle bridge downstream to the Thermalito Afterbay Outlet. This stretch flows directly through the city of Oroville and is typically maintained at low, controlled releases to support salmon and steelhead spawning and incubation.

Because of these managed flows, the Low Flow Feather is highly wadable, clear, and defined by slower walking-speed water, obvious seams, and predictable holding lies. While fish numbers can fluctuate seasonally, this section offers a unique opportunity to fish a large river in a very approachable, technical way.

This stretch rewards anglers who enjoy precision, light rigs, and thoughtful presentations, and it’s one of the best places to truly learn how depth, angle, and drift affect success

How to Fish This Water

The Low Flow Feather is a presentation-driven fishery. Fish tend to hold in clearly defined seams, tailouts, and walking-speed runs where they can conserve energy during spawning periods.

Instead of covering a lot of water quickly, success comes from slowing down, adjusting depth often, and thoroughly fishing productive lanes.

Key Approach Notes

  • Change weight before changing flies

  • Focus on drag-free drifts through defined seams

  • Expect subtle takes—watch your indicator closely

  • Move when water stops producing

This stretch is unforgiving of sloppy drifts but very rewarding when things line up.
