Fishing Report

  • Flows have dropped and are scheduled to hit 6,000 CFS on March 1, creating ideal conditions for chasing trophy trout. These flows make wading and drifting more accessible, and the fish are feeding aggressively. Expect blue-winged olive (BWO) hatches during cloudy weather, while warmer days will bring caddis activity. If you’re on the water early, midges are a reliable producer before the bigger bugs start to pop.

🚨 Time is Running Out! The stretch above Highway 44 closes on March 31, and this is where California’s biggest wild trout reside. If you’re looking for that once-in-a-lifetime trophy trout photo, now is the time to book your trip before this section shuts down. Don’t miss your chance to experience some of the best fly fishing Northern California has to offer!

📅 Limited Availability – Book Now! Secure your spot before the closure and take advantage of our March Discount. Visit bockflyfishing.com or call us today!

    🎯 Recommended Flies:

    • Morning: Zebra Midges

    • Nymphing: Olive Hot Spot, BWO imitation, Cinnamon Caddis Pupa (Tim Fox’s version), Bird’s Nest

    • Dirty Water: Rubber Legs

    • Dry Fly Headhunting: Comparadun, Elk Hair Caddis

  • Flows have dropped to 1955 CFS as of February 28 and dropping to 1600 CFS, making the low-flow stretch very fishable from a drift boat. However, bank access remains a bit challenging until flows drop further. As conditions stabilize, expect even better wade-fishing opportunities.

Right now, BWOs and midges dominate the hatch, while warmer days will bring some caddis activity. These steelhead are aggressive, making swinging soft hackles and streamers a solid tactic.

🎣 Now’s the Time to Target Feather River Steelhead! The river is in prime condition for a guided drift trip. Book now to lock in your March Discount and experience some of the best winter steelhead action in NorCal!

    🎯 Recommended Flies:

    • Nymphing: Fox’s Olive Caddis Pupa, Olive Bird’s Nest, Sweet Pea Nymph, Crack Back BWO, Hogan’s S&M Nymph

    • Swinging: Sculpzilla, Olive Bird’s Nest, White/Olive/Black Micro Bugger

  • Flows are still too high at 10,000 CFS for safe bank or drift fishing, but conditions are improving. Once flows drop to around 6,000 CFS, this section will become much more fishable. Keep an eye on the flows, as this could be a great opportunity in the coming weeks!

🌊 Striper Alert! With this much water moving through the system, stripers have been able to migrate past the diversion dam downstream of Gridley. This means that spring and summer should provide some excellent opportunities to target stripers in the Feather River. If you’re looking to chase big, aggressive stripers on the fly, start planning now!

  • The Yuba is still flowing at 4,800 CFS, which is too high for safe public access.

🚧 Limited Access: Yuba County has kept the access on the south side of Parks Bar Bridge closed to vehicle traffic, and private homeowners on the north side have restricted access as well. Best public access points are Hammon Grove Park and Sycamore Ranch, but at current flows, you’ll need to cross the river to fish multiple runs, which isn’t possible until flows drop.

Until conditions improve, it’s best to focus on other fisheries for now.

  • The year-round mountain streams are starting to recede, creating some great opportunities before runoff kicks in. While many high-elevation creeks remain too high to target, there are a few hidden gems where you can find clear, fishable water and hungry trout.

🎣 Now is a great time to explore before runoff begins! If you're looking to hone your small-stream techniques or just want to chase wild trout in beautiful mountain settings, now is the time to get out there.

  • If you’re looking for consistent action, Baum Lake remains one of the best winter fishing options. Conditions are ideal, and the fish are active and feeding. There’s always some kind of hatch activity, so dry fly anglers should focus on BWOs.

For nymphing, a black and bloody balanced leech with a chironomid dropper is a deadly combination. With solid brown trout populations, streamer fishing can also be incredibly productive—watch for feeding pods and make your move!

    🎯 Recommended Flies:

    • Dries: BWOs

    • Nymphing: Black and Bloody Balanced Leech, Chironomid Dropper

    • Streamers: Small Buggers, Dace Imitations

📅 Looking for a great winter fishing destination? Baum Lake is the perfect place to book a trip—don’t wait!
