This full-day Introduction to Fly Fishing clinic is designed specifically for beginners who want to learn the basics in a beautiful, relaxed setting. We’ll fish a peaceful small stream tucked into the mountains near Chico, California—perfect for learning the fundamentals while surrounded by nature.
This isn’t just a fishing trip—it’s a hands-on, supportive learning experience that covers everything you need to feel confident on the water. No prior experience required. We'll provide gear if you need it, and by the end of the day, you’ll know how to rig, cast, and fish a fly rod on your own.

Clinic Schedule & Curriculum
This clinic is a mix of instruction though hands-on practice, and demonstrations (both on-the-water and on the banks). By the end of the day, you’ll have a solid foundation in fly fishing basic techniques, gear selection, water reading, and fish handling.

What is Fly Fishing? – A friendly overview of how fly fishing works
Why Small Streams? – Learn why these waters are ideal for building skills
Casting Basics – Try out roll casting, overhead casting, and more (no pressure!)
Aquatic Insects & Fly Selection – Discover the bugs fish eat and how to “match the hatch”
How to Set Up Your Rod – Learn about leaders, tippet, knots, indicators, and fly placement
Reading Water – How to find where fish live and how to approach quietly
Introduction to Dry Fly & Nymph Fishing – Learn the difference and how to try both

We’ll spread out and start fishing—with your instructor right there to help. You'll apply everything you've learned, and we'll work together on your casting, fly presentation, and how to hook and land fish safely. Expect support, encouragement, and plenty of tips to help you feel more comfortable.
The goal: get you ready to enjoy fly fishing on your own, wherever your next adventure takes you.

Fly rod: 8' to 9'6", balanced for a 3–6 weight line (9’ 4WT or 5WT recommended)
Fly reel: With a weight-forward (WF) floating line that matches the rod
Tippet: 4X–6X (fluorocarbon preferred)
Tapered leader: 9' in 4X and 5X
Small fly box: Filled with general attractor nymphs and dry flies (see list below)
Split shot: (BB, AB, SSA sizes recommended)
Strike indicators: Small yarn or pinch-on foam (Air-Lock optional)
Waders and boots: Comfortable and waterproof (spikes optional)
Wading belt & wading staff: Safety first—both are highly recommended
Polarized sunglasses: Essential for spotting fish and reducing glare
Hat & sunscreen: Sun protection is important, even on cloudy days
Rain jacket: Weather can change quickly—come prepared
Layered clothing: Dress for changing conditions; avoid cotton
Hemostats & line nippers: For handling flies and cutting line
Vest, chest, or hip pack: Optional, for organizing your gear
Valid California fishing license: Required by lawFlies: PJ will provide a suggested list; additional flies will be available
